The construction of the camp was finished on the 22nd of March 1933. It was primarily used for the “custody” of political prisoners, especially the critics of Adolf Hitler.
In the course of time other people who were a thorn in the side of the Nazi regime were brought-in to the Dachau concentration camp. It included criminals, homosexuals and people of Jewish descent.

In total, the number of prisoners from all over Europe grew; at its peak it reached 200 thousand. An estimated 41,500 people have been murdered here during the Nazi terror years.
This camp served as a “blueprint” for the other concentration camps in Europe. In the last few years of the war, a gas chamber was built in the Dachau concentration camp.
According to official statements this chamber has never been used – the truth remains controversial according to today’s historians.

of former conditions. No book can replace this impression. In addition to the preserved and restored buildings, you also have the possibility to visit different museums.
The exhibition entitled “The Path of the prisoners” reconstructs the path that every new prisoner in the concentration camp was forced to take. Original documents and a rich selection of photographs are exhibited there. Snacks are available on the memorial site. In addition, it is possible to buy books and to take away information brochures for more insight into the history of the concentration camp.
